One Year Lease (OYL) is an ensemble theater company that commissions playwrights to create new, contemporary productions using ancient myth and old stories as inspiration.
Founded in 2000, OYL has produced over 18 shows and toured six productions to Greece and Italy. Company members come from diverse international backgrounds including the USA, Greece, Australia and New Zealand.
OYL's journey with The Killing Room began in 2009 when we commissioned Australian playwright Daniel Keene to write a new play using the myth of Thyestes as inspiration. After 4 script drafts and 3 workshops, we are proud to launch the world premiere of this exciting, thought-provoking and daring piece of contemporary theater.
OYL annually commissions two contemporary playwrights from around the globe to create specific, collaborative new theater texts for our company. Our annual season in New York City consists of two full productions every spring.
Our next production entitled Manmade Mistakes by New York-based American Playwright Danny Mitarotondo will premiere this May, 2011. Click here for more information.
Every OYL season begins with a month-long residency in Papingo, Greece, where we workshop current and future projects and run our unique and very successful Apprenticeship program. The program culminates in outdoor performances in the villages in the area.
OYL is able to continue this work and consistently contribute to the development of contemporary theater in America through the generosity of individual donors and other supporters. Please visit www.oneyearlease.org to become a supporter of our company.
