OYL is an ensemble theater company.  We create work that explores our contemporary world through the lens of our ancient past, commission playwrights to create work in response to their contemporaries, and advocate ensemble based performance.

Our aesthetic is defined by specific physical vocabularies, absurdist tendencies, visual landscapes, and dark comedy.

Founded in 2000, OYL has produced over 18 shows and toured six productions internationally. OYL works with a wide variety of actors, designers, playwrights, and other creative, ambitious folks from different backgrounds. Our current ensemble comes from the United States, Greece, Australia, and New Zealand, and our actors are trained in a variety of methods. We incorporate these many different outlooks and experiences into the work we do, both at home and abroad.

OYL commissions contemporary playwrights from around the globe to create specific, collaborative new theater texts for our company.  Our annual season in New York City consists of two full productions every spring. Every OYL season begins with a month-long residency in Papingo, Greece, where we workshop current and future projects and run our unique and very successful Apprenticeship program.
