Machinal is loosely based
on the sensational 1927 trial of
Ruth Snyder who, along with her lover Judd Gray, murdered
her husband. A year later, Snyder became the first women
to be put to death in the electric chair in New York State.
Machinal is a provocative look at an increasingly
impersonal world—perhaps more vital now than it
was nearly 75 years ago when it was written.
Performed at Theater for the New City, November/December
2003.
